🌿 Reggie always told people she wanted to be a doctor when she grew up. Mostly because it sounded good. She was a bright kid, so hard working and organized. Plus, growing up on a dairy goat farm meant she’d spent her entire childhood handling placenta and goat shit and gluing together wounds so they wouldn’t have to call the vet. But by the time she got to college, after years of hearing about how bright her future would be, Reggie knew that wasn’t what she wanted. She didn’t want the schooling and internships that would drag her away from home, or the academic burnout looming on the horizon, and she sure as hell didn’t want to join the military to pay for med school. Instead, she followed a friend into emergency services, she became a firefighter and went into paramedic training, and she tried to quiet that buzzing desire to do something self-destructive just a little.

🌿 The first person she lost was her dad. The Fever took him, back when things were normal, more or less. There was no fear of him coming back and taking chunks out of everyone around him, and Reggie intended to bury herself in work to cope. But then Dad came back, and suddenly the whole world was different. Mom and Stormy were evacuated, and Reggie fled to work to survive. Last she heard, they were trying to get to Olympia to find her mom’s sister, and she promised to follow them when things quieted down. She likes to pretend they made it safe and sound.

🌿 Reggie made the responders her family after that. If she was going to get attached, it would be to people who could take care of themselves, people she could leave alone unsupervised. She allowed herself to hyperfocus on little tasks and volunteer for every shift that needed a body, just to tire herself out and let her fall asleep at the end of the day. With the vaccine rolling out and the zombies deteriorating more and more every day, she could almost believe something good was on the horizon.

But there’s always a but, and the world was far from safe. It still feels surreal to think about responding to the emergency call from Celia and Dylan what feels like days ago, when the two of them wound up on the wrong end of a feral attack while trying to do some repairs. Celia, their leader of sorts, made it back to the Station, but not for long. Dylan, one of Reggie’s closest friends, died before either she or Ares could even figure out where he was bleeding from. He didn’t reanimate like her dad, just slipped away from an injury she knows they could have treated a few years ago. Naturally, her response was to burrow into work like a tick.

🌿 Now they say things are getting better. People aren’t dropping dead after a bite anymore, so we might as well progress and rebuild. They say that, as if they’re not still mourning their dead, as if danger isn’t still everywhere and the price of their relative safety isn’t the tenuous sanity of her and the other responders. The truth is, Reggie doesn’t really want the world to go back to normal. She barely knew who she wanted to be and how to navigate that world, and at least these days she feels like she’s sort of passing as a wise and functioning adult.
